How to Remove a Common Ceiling Light?
Removing a ceiling light is a common household task. Whether for cleaning, replacing LED chips or drivers, or installing a new fixture, mastering the correct method helps avoid damage to the light and ceiling. Common ceiling lights are mainly divided into clip-mounted and screw-fixed types. The process is simple and requires no professional tools. Below are detailed steps with safety emphasized throughout. Beginners can follow directly and complete the task within 5 minutes.
Preparation Before Removal
The first and most important step is to cut off the power. Turn off the circuit breaker corresponding to the ceiling light or unplug the power supply. Wait 5–10 minutes to allow the fixture and driver to cool down, preventing electric shock or burns. Prepare a flathead or Phillips screwdriver and gloves (to avoid hand injuries). If the fixture is heavy, ask someone to assist in supporting it to prevent falling injuries.
Type 1: Clip-Mounted Ceiling Light
(Most common; ultra-thin and minimalist models usually fall into this category.) These fixtures have no visible screws and are secured by clips.
Hold the edge of the light body with both hands and gently pull downward to locate the clip positions (usually 3–4 evenly distributed). Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry the clips while supporting the fixture with your hand to prevent it from falling. Once all clips are released, slowly remove the fixture. Avoid pulling the wires connected to the base plate. Place the fixture on a stable surface.
Type 2: Screw-Fixed Ceiling Light
(Thicker or decorative models are usually this type.) First, inspect the edge or base plate to locate the fixing screws (usually 2–4 pieces). Use the appropriate screwdriver to remove them, supporting the fixture at all times to prevent sudden dropping once screws are removed. After all screws are taken out, slowly lower the fixture to expose the wiring terminals. Remember the connections of live wire, neutral wire, and ground wire (take a photo for reference), then gently disconnect the wire connectors to remove the fixture.
Important Safety Reminders
Handle gently during removal. Do not forcefully bend the fixture to avoid damaging clips or the base. If clips are too tight, pry carefully in small increments and never use excessive force. Store the removed fixture and screws properly to avoid loss. By mastering these two methods, you can safely and efficiently remove over 90% of common ceiling lights on the market.
