Why Does a Fabric Lampshade Often Make Light Look Dim?

23 Jul 2026 0 comments
Pourquoi un abat-jour en tissu donne-t-il souvent une lumière plus sombre ?

Fabric lampshades are popular because they create a soft, warm and decorative atmosphere. They are often used on table lamps, floor lamps and pendant lights. However, many people notice that a lamp with a fabric shade can make a room feel darker than expected. This is usually not a fault with the lamp. It is simply how fabric interacts with light.

Why does fabric make light softer but less bright?

Fabric does not let all the light pass through. Some light is diffused, some is absorbed by the fibres, and some remains inside the shade. This makes the light more comfortable and less glaring, but it also reduces the amount of usable brightness in the room.

1. Fabric colour has a major effect

White, cream and pale beige shades usually transmit more light. Dark grey, black, brown, dark green and navy shades absorb much more light. A dark fabric shade may look stylish, but it is usually better for mood lighting than for bright general lighting.

2. Thickness and weave change the result

A thin, loosely woven fabric lets more light through. A thick, lined or tightly woven fabric blocks more light and creates a dimmer, more intimate effect. Two shades in similar colours can therefore perform very differently.

3. The inner lining matters

A gold lining creates a warm decorative glow, but it may reduce overall brightness. A black or grey lining absorbs more light. A light or reflective inner surface usually helps the lamp feel brighter.

4. Dust reduces light transmission

Fabric collects dust more easily than glass, metal or acrylic. Over time, dust settles into the fibres and makes the shade less translucent. Gentle regular cleaning can help restore some brightness.

5. Lumens matter more than watts

With a fabric shade, check lumens rather than watts alone. Watts mainly describe energy use, while lumens describe light output. Since fabric absorbs part of the light, a low-lumen bulb may not provide enough usable brightness.

Where does a fabric shade work best?

  • Bedroom: good for soft relaxing light.
  • Living room: ideal for atmosphere and accent lighting.
  • Reading corner: possible with enough lumens.
  • Kitchen or office: less suitable as the only main light.
  • Large room: best combined with other light sources.

How to avoid a room feeling too dim

  1. Choose a light-coloured fabric.
  2. Avoid very thick fabric for main lighting.
  3. Choose a shade open at the top and bottom.
  4. Use a bulb or LED source with enough lumens.
  5. Clean dust from the shade regularly.
  6. Add another lamp or ceiling light in larger rooms.

Conclusion

A fabric lampshade often looks dim because fabric absorbs and diffuses part of the light. This is useful for comfort and atmosphere, but it can reduce brightness. For a better balance, choose a pale fabric, an open shade shape and a light source with enough lumens.
