Why Are Incandescent Bulbs Still Used? A Timeless Beacon Across Centuries

Pourquoi utilise-t-on encore les ampoules à incandescence Un héritage lumineux à travers les siècles

In today’s lighting market, where LEDs dominate with their energy efficiency, the incandescent bulb – a pioneer born in the 19th century – still shines defiantly in certain corners. Though energy-hungry and short-lived, even banned in many countries, it has never completely disappeared. A closer look at human emotions and daily life reveals that this warm glow holds meaning far beyond technical specifications.

1. Emotional Connection: the nostalgic filter

The warm 2700K light of an incandescent bulb carries a built-in time filter. In many people’s memories, an old bulb hanging above a wooden table casts a soft golden glow over homework desks or family dinners. This cozy and hazy light is deeply tied to feelings of home and childhood. Retro cafés and nostalgia-themed restaurants use it intentionally to recreate an “old-time” atmosphere. In filmmaking, directors often choose incandescent bulbs to authentically capture the mood of a specific era, thanks to their distinctive light quality.

2. Optical Qualities: unmatched color rendering

Even with constant advancements in LED technology, incandescent bulbs maintain a perfect color rendering index (CRI) of 100, reproducing colors exactly as they are. Jewelry stores use them to highlight the brilliance of gold and the vibrancy of gemstones. Painters also trust their light when mixing and evaluating colors, as it reveals the subtlest variations. Additionally, their light is soft, flicker-free, and free of harmful blue light, making them a more comfortable choice for people with light sensitivity or certain eye conditions.

3. Specific Applications: indispensable in certain settings

In some situations, the simple and reliable nature of incandescent bulbs is a clear advantage. On temporary construction sites or during outdoor camping, they work instantly without complex electronics. In environments sensitive to electromagnetic interference – such as specialized hospital rooms or precision laboratories – they are preferred for their complete absence of EM emissions. In decorative vintage fixtures, the glowing filament itself becomes a visual centerpiece.

4. Economic Considerations: cost-effective in the short term

While LEDs reduce electricity costs over time, incandescent bulbs are unmatched in upfront affordability. For rarely used lighting – such as holiday decorations or temporary event setups – their low cost is appealing. In low-income regions, this economic advantage often outweighs energy efficiency, prolonging their presence in daily life.

The enduring presence of incandescent bulbs is the result of intertwined emotional, technical, and economic factors. Like a steadfast craftsman, they hold their ground in the fast-moving world of lighting technology. One day they may disappear entirely, but their warmth and unique value will remain in history and in the hearts of people everywhere.
